African-Canadian Heritage Tour
Guided Tours are available year round for groups of 20 people or more.
Upon being greeted at the entrance to the Josiah Henson Interpretive Centre, your guide will escort you into the North Star Theatre and provide you with historical background material on Josiah Henson and the settlement he founded just outside of the small town of Dresden, Ontario. A 25-minute video presentation will highlight Reverend Henson's remarkable achievements. The secret route to freedom used by enslaved persons is brought to life in the Underground Railroad Freedom Gallery, where the sounds of slave spirituals echo throughout the exhibits. Numerous authentic period artifacts are on display, including control devices used to oppress these freedom seekers from the south. Step back in time to the 19th century as your tour continues outside with a stroll along a gravel pathway that leads to our three historic buildings.
Your guide will tour you through the James Harris House, an early example of the structures built by the settlers; the Josiah Henson House, better know as Uncle Tom's cabin, is furnished and open for viewing; take a moment to yourself and reflect on the struggles and accomplishments of these pioneers in the period church onsite; at the end of the pathway is the Henson Family Cemetery, where Josiah Henson's monument, and those of his family, can be found.
Your tour concludes with a visit to the Central Station Gift Shop, where you're sure to find that special, unique memento to remember your visit.
